Three Main Functions of Microgrid Energy Storage System

Energy storage is an important part of the “collection-generating-transmission-distribution-use-storage” power system, and it is the basis for building a new energy microgrid. New energy power generation such as wind power and photovoltaics belongs to intermittent power generation, which has obvious instability and is deeply troubled by “wind abandonment” and “limited power generation”.

Microgrid is an important part of the realization of smart grid. It can realize the integrated operation of internal power supply and load, and can coordinate and control with the main power grid, smoothly connect to the main power grid or operate independently, and can meet or even improve the user’s requirements for power quality, power reliability and safety.

When both the main grid and the microgrid are normal, the microgrid and the main grid are connected to the grid, and the power generated by the microgrid will give priority to meet the needs of the local user load.

When the microgrid system detects a main grid failure or serious power quality problems, the microgrid will actively disconnect from the main grid and operate independently to ensure the normal operation of the main load.

1. The energy storage system of microgrid can improve the stability of distributed energy

Distributed energy sources such as solar energy, wind energy, biomass energy and other renewable energy sources are generally affected by external environment such as light, temperature, wind power, climate and other factors, and the power generation has the characteristics of randomness and instability.

When the microgrid is disconnected from the power grid and operates independently, the output power of the distributed energy in the microgrid changes with the change of environmental factors, and cannot provide a stable output for the load.

The energy storage system is applied to the micro-grid. Through the energy management system (EMS), the distributed energy, the energy storage system and the main grid are controlled collaboratively, which can stabilize the fluctuation of the distributed energy, stabilize the output, and provide the local distribution of the distributed energy. Utilization, avoid long-distance transmission to the main grid to cause transmission pressure and power loss.

In addition, the energy storage system can continue to provide part of the power for the main load at night or during the maintenance of distributed energy, reducing the time of power outages.

2. The energy storage system of the microgrid can improve the power quality of the user’s electricity

When the microgrid is connected to the main grid and is connected to the grid, its power quality must meet the relevant national standards, that is, parameters such as power factor, voltage asymmetry, current harmonic distortion rate, and voltage flashover must reach corresponding values.

In the absence of an energy storage system, the microgrid cannot guarantee the power quality, especially the voltage stability, due to the characteristics of its own energy.

The application of the energy storage system can play an important role in the improvement of the power quality of the microgrid. By controlling the energy storage PCS, the system adjusts the active and reactive power output by the energy storage system to the microgrid while stabilizing the output of the energy and solving voltage dips/sags.

In the face of problems such as voltage swells and dips in the main grid, the energy storage system of the microgrid can provide fast power buffering, quickly absorb/supplement electrical energy, provide active and reactive power support, and stabilize voltage fluctuations. The energy storage system can also provide some harmonic control functions for the microgrid.

3. The energy storage system of the microgrid can adjust the peak

In the microgrid, the energy storage system can store the excess power generated by the distributed energy resources when the load is low, release the power when the load is at the peak, and adjust the load demand.

As the energy buffer link in the microgrid, the energy storage system is indispensable in the microgrid system. The energy storage system of the microgrid can reduce the required capacity of the generator set or transformer while meeting the peak load power consumption.
