SCU 1MWh BESS Supports European Manure Plant Energy Savings

1MWh Containerized BESS Turns European Chicken Manure Plants into Energy Saving Revenue Centers

As electricity prices continue to challenge industrial operators across Europe, more facilities are looking for practical ways to control energy costs without interrupting production. For agricultural waste treatment plants, where equipment often runs for long hours and electricity demand is relatively stable, energy storage system offers a direct path to reducing peak hour electricity expenses and improving operational efficiency.

SCU recently supplied a 20ft containerized energy storage system for a Belgian customer operating a chicken manure treatment plant. The project is connected to the grid and designed for peak-valley arbitrage, allowing the plant to charge the battery during lower tariff periods and discharge during peak price hours.

The solution is configured with a capacity of 1.2MWh/625kW, providing approximately 1.9 hours of rated energy output. With this capacity, the plant can shift up to 1.2MWh of electricity use per cycle, helping reduce dependence on high price grid power during peak periods.

Based on an estimated peak-valley electricity price spread of €0.09–€0.12/kWh, one full daily cycle can generate around €108–€144 in electricity cost savings per day. Over a year, this represents an estimated annual arbitrage value of approximately €35,000–€50,000, depending on the actual tariff structure, battery operation strategy, and number of cycles. For the customer, this means the energy storage system is not only a power management asset, but also a revenue generating infrastructure investment.

SCU containerized BESS integrates battery modules, PCS, thermal management, fire protection, monitoring, and control systems inside a standardized 20ft container. This compact design makes the solution suitable for industrial and agricultural sites where space, safety, and fast deployment are important.

This solution shows how energy storage can create measurable value beyond renewable energy applications. For facilities with regular electricity demand and peak-valley tariff differences, SCU’s containerized energy storage system provides a practical solution for cost reduction, stable operation, and smarter energy management.

With this project, SCU further expands its experience in European industrial and agricultural energy storage applications. In fact, SCU has previously provided energy storage systems for European agriculture and livestock industries on numerous occasions, supporting customers in improving energy efficiency, reducing electricity costs, and building more flexible power management systems.

As energy costs continue to affect agricultural and livestock businesses across Europe, SCU will continue to deliver reliable, scalable, and project ready energy storage solutions for customers seeking lower costs, stronger energy resilience, and smarter energy management.
