SCU Battery Integrated EV Charger for European Truck Fleet Facing Grid Constraints

SCU has deployed EVMS ONE battery integrated EV charger to a truck fleet operator in Belgium, tailoring its proposal to the client’s limited grid capacity and high-power charging requirements. The deployment comprises multiple units, four EVMS ONE-120 and one EVMS ONE-240 providing a combined rated EV charging output of 720 kW and 1.56 MWh of battery storage.

Battery-Integrated DC Fast Charging for Grid-Constrained Sites

For fleet operators, insufficient grid capacity can make conventional high power EV charging prohibitively expensive or delay deployment while electrical infrastructure is upgraded. Such projects may require transformer upgrades, grid connection reinforcement, and additional civil works, with costs and timelines varying significantly by site.

To address this challenge, SCU recommended a battery integrated DC EV charger system that combines battery energy storage, power conversion, and EV charging in a single unit. By using stored energy to supplement the available grid supply, EVMS ONE can deliver high charging power without requiring the grid connection to match the charger’s full rated output at every moment.

This approach to battery integrated DC fast charging for grid-constrained sites enables fleet operators to deploy high-power charging infrastructure while making more effective use of their existing electrical capacity.

Reducing Grid Upgrade Costs with Battery-Integrated Fast Charging

The financial case for battery-assisted EV charger becomes particularly relevant when additional grid capacity requires substantial infrastructure investment. For planning purposes, consider an illustrative scenario in which a commercial fleet site faces€100,000-€300,000 in additional grid-related infrastructure costs to accommodate conventional high-power EV charging.

A grid upgrade of this scale could also extend the project timeline by several months, with more complex works potentially taking a year or longer. By contrast, battery-integrated fast charging can potentially reduce or avoid some of these additional grid-related investments by using stored energy to supplement the available grid supply.

The benefits extend beyond the initial infrastructure investment. With 1.56 MWh of integrated battery storage across the five EVMS ONE units, the system can store energy during off-peak periods and use it to support truck charging when electricity prices or power demand are higher.

Under an illustrative operating scenario, the system could shift approximately 230,000–455,000 kWh of electricity annually. Assuming a peak-to-off-peak price difference of €0.05 per kWh, this could represent approximately €11,000–€23,000. By managing when energy is drawn from the grid, EVMS ONE can help optimize energy expenditure while supporting high-power charging within the site’s grid capacity constraints.

How the Battery Integrated DC EV Charger Supports High-Power Truck Charging

EVMS ONE addresses the gap between available grid power and the high instantaneous demand of electric truck charging. Its battery storage can accumulate energy using a limited grid connection and deliver it at higher power when vehicles need to charge. For the 240 kW configuration, a grid input of 30 kW can support charging output of up to 240 kW, subject to operating conditions and available stored energy.

This battery-integrated fast charging approach allows fleet operators to access high charging power without requiring the grid connection to match the charger’s full rated output at every moment. By integrating the battery, power conversion, and charging functions into one unit, EVMS ONE can also simplify site integration, reduce equipment footprint, and help streamline installation.

For fleet operators, this combination of flexible power delivery, integrated installation, and energy management provides a way to align charging infrastructure with operational needs rather than relying exclusively on the capacity of the grid connection.

A Flexible Battery Integrated EV Charger Solution for Electric Truck Fleets

As electric truck adoption grows, the ability to deliver high-power charging with limited grid capacity is becoming increasingly important. With EVMS ONE, SCU offers an alternative approach to deploying high-power EV charging infrastructure, helping fleet operators optimize infrastructure investment, simplify deployment, and make more effective use of available electrical capacity.
