SCU has supplied a 2MWh/1MW containerized battery energy storage system (BESS) to a sand and gravel processing plant in Germany, integrating with a 1MW floating solar PV installation on an adjacent lake. Designed to maximize solar self-consumption, the system enables the facility to store surplus renewable energy and use it during periods of higher demand, with the potential to deliver approximately 1,600kWh of stored electricity daily, equivalent to 584,000kWh annually, under illustrative operating conditions.

Based on an assumed net electricity benefit of €0.15/kWh, this optimized energy utilization could result in estimated annual electricity savings of €87,600. By improving the utilization of locally generated solar power, the battery storage system provides a more efficient approach to managing renewable energy and reducing reliance on grid electricity.
Sand and gravel processing is an energy-intensive operation, with crushers, screening equipment, and conveyor systems requiring substantial electricity throughout production. Although the plant’s 1MW floating solar array generates renewable power during daylight hours, fluctuations in solar generation and operational demand can leave valuable electricity underutilized.

To address this challenge, SCU supplied a 40ft containerized energy storage system with 2MWh battery capacity and 1MW rated output. The system stores surplus solar electricity and releases it when needed, providing a theoretical two-hour discharge duration at full rated power. This enables the facility to increase the utilization of locally generated solar energy while reducing its dependence on grid electricity.
Beyond potential cost savings, the integration of floating solar PV and battery storage provides a more flexible energy management strategy, helping the plant improve renewable energy utilization, strengthen energy independence, and manage long-term electricity expenses.

This solution demonstrates SCU’s expertise in integrating battery energy storage solutions with renewable energy systems for industrial applications. SCU provides a scalable approach to improving renewable energy utilization, optimizing power management, and supporting the transition toward more sustainable industrial operations. Through reliable technology and customized energy solutions, SCU continues to empower businesses worldwide to unlock greater value from clean energy investments.
